Your Guide to A Day At the New England Aquarium with Kids

The New England Aquarium is Boston’s most beloved aquarium, which is a firm favorite with kids of all ages. The aquarium stays super crowded all through summer weekdays and weekends with children and parents pointing out the beautiful fish and corals to each other.
Getting to the New England Aquarium is easy. It’s opposite the Boston International Airport across the Boston Main Harbor, on the Central Wharf. Prebook your tickets online since tickets sell out fast for weekends and national holidays.
It takes the better part of a day to tour the aquarium, so arrive early! Tickets are priced at $39 for adults, $37 for seniors and $30 for kids between 3 and 11. You can book tickets for the 3D movies screened at the nearby Simons Theatre or opt for the Boston CityPASS®, which gives you access to 3 other Boston attractions, saving you 48%.
Let’s start your day!
Morning 9 A.M. to 1 P.M.
Start your day at the 50-member strong penguin colony where feeding begins at 9 a.m. sharp. Kids will be amazed to see the strange rockhopper penguins with their yellow crests and their plainer cousins, the African penguins. In case you miss it, there is another feeding and presentation time at 2.30 p.m.
Head over to the Giant Ocean Tank for the presentation of the green sea turtle and the thousands of small fish species living among the corals. Once that’s over, make your way to the Tropical Gallery to check out the warm water fishes like butterflyfish and lionfish living among the colorful coral.
The Atlantic Harbor Seal Presentation begins at 11:15 a.m. and in case you miss it, you can catch another presentation at 3:15 p.m. Complete the California sea lions presentation at the Marine Mammal Center and head over to Level 2 for lunch.
Lunch & Afternoon 1 P.M. to 5 P.M.
Enjoy a light lunch at the Harbor View Cafe on Level 2. Or you can explore places around the Central Wharf for a decent lunch spot.
After lunch, head back to see the jellyfish at the Temperate Waters Gallery.
Go up the ramp to Level 3 to view the flesh-eating red-bellied piranhas from the Amazon and the enigmatic electric eel.
Visit sea birds at the Northern Waters Gallery and continue up to finish your day tour at the Yawkey Coral Reef Center, which showcases sea creatures from the Caribbean coral reefs.
In case you still have time, head back down to Level 1 to view the different shark species, including the epaulette shark, at the Science of Sharks exhibit.
If your kids are feeling adventurous, don’t miss let them miss the chance to let an Atlantic ray glide past their hands at The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank!
When you or your little ones want to ask a question about the creatures, their habitats, or food, you will find Aquarium educators all around to help answer your questions.
Evening 5 P.M.
End your day with the last show at the Simons Theatre. Children will enjoy the immersive 3D experience of watching a documentary movie on a 5-storey high screen! Head home after a full day of exploring aquatic creatures.
