Summer Family Activities at Big Sky Resort

Big Sky Resort is ideal for families to enjoy a summer vacation. Although it is considered an excellent winter destination because of its skiing and snow-related activities, this resort has many offerings that families can enjoy in any season.

Visiting Big Sky in the summer means access to many outdoor recreation opportunities, including whitewater rafting, fly fishing, and hiking. In addition, there are endless options for summer activities, including live music, hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

The resort has over 40 activities for visitors of all ages. So whether you are looking for something simple like a game of tag or something more advanced like horseback riding, Big Sky Resort will have it covered.

Big Sky Resort also has an onsite playground for families with toddlers or young children. In addition, there are two pools with slides, basketball courts, and volleyball courts so parents can relax while their children play in the water.

It is not just about the incredible activities but the whole experience of spending quality time together, so it is good that this Big Sky has various attractions and destinations.

Here are some of the perfect summer activities for family bonding at Big Sky Resort:

  • Golfing

Big Sky Resort has many golf courses, including an 18-hole designed by Arnold Palmer. There are also driving ranges where kids can learn how to drive and hit balls! If they are feeling more competitive than cooperative, try playing on one of our 9-hole courses instead—they will love stomping around in their little boots!

  • Hiking

Big Sky Resort has several hiking trails, perfect for all ages. The Trail of the Cedars (1.5 miles round trip) is the easiest one to access, which begins at the Big Sky Lodge and ends at the base of a waterfall. You can also hike up to the top of Mount Helen (4 miles round trip).

Another excellent hike for families with kids is the Ousel Falls trail outside Big Sky Town Center. It is a favorite hike among locals and travelers and is even a well-known option for hikers with dogs.

During the hike, families would have an exciting time in a sunny meadow for a picnic amidst the mountain wildflowers.

  • Dining

Big Sky Resort has plenty of restaurants and bars that cater to adults and kids. In addition, there are several restaurants onsite where you can grab a bite to eat after your day at the pool or on one of their many trails. Some favorite family-friendly dining options include Hungry Moose, Vista Hall, and Everett’s 8800.

  • Zipline

Big Sky Resort offers two zipline tours that can accommodate different ages. For example, families with older children will have a grand time at the Nature Zipline Tour, while adults looking for an adrenaline rush will appreciate the Adventure Zip Line Tour.

Both tours start at the Base Camp at Big Sky Resort and feature breathtaking views of the Spanish Peaks of Madison range and the Lone Mountain.

  • Horseback Riding

Hit the trail with a dependable steed and seasoned wrangler. Families can enjoy guided tours from one hour to all day amid the Big Sky wilderness areas. Beginners and experienced riders will enjoy wildlife viewing and scenic vistas.

Big Sky Resort has several official partners for horseback riding activities: Jake’s Horses, Cache Creek Outfitters, Canyon Adventures, Lone Mountain Ranch, and Rocking HK Outfitters.

  • Archery

Big Sky Resort has an Archery Course for visitors aged eight and above. The trip to the range is also a memorable experience since it involves riding a Ramcharger 8, with the Lone Peak as the backdrop.

  • Whitewater Rafting

Fly fishing is not the only activity at the Montana waterways. Its rivers and streams are excellent for whitewater rafting because of the winter run-off and swift currents.

Geyser Whitewater is the only provider near Big Sky Resort, providing a knowledgeable guide and the safest gear. The whitewater rafting activity is best for adventurous families with teens, with half and full-day excursions available.

  • Mountain Biking

Best for kids aged eight and above, Big Sky Resort offers over 50 miles of mountain biking trails. In addition, the Youth Downhill Camp is perfect for experienced children and teens who want to try their hand at the sport of downhill mountain biking.

Big Sky Resort also has a Downhill Coaching course for adults new to the sport, which consists of half-day lessons. For experienced riders, the resort offers bike rentals, and unlimited bike haul passes for the lift-served trails.
