Princeton New Jersey Car Service with Car Seats

Every family vacation counts!
Every opportunity to spend time with your loved ones in other places provides you a chance to know each other better as well as to show them that you genuinely value them. Traveling alone has its advantages but definitely cannot replace time well spent with the family, especially with our family’s younger members.

“I will probably just wait until they grow older.”

We know the advantages of taking your children to see different places and have new experiences. Packing light can sometimes be a challenge when you’re traveling with kids. Add to that packing and carrying them around.

When traveling with children, we always have to consider “childproofing” every activity, from arriving at the airport to checking in the hotel or accommodation. It is understandable if traveling with your children has been on the back burner because of these matters.

But what if there is a solution to help you travel to different places with your children that allows you to pack a lot less and provide an extra layer of safety and security for them during the trip?

Proper car seat installation

Having and bringing your car seats to trips are not enough.

In a 2011 nationwide study, the NHTSA found that 46 percent of child seats are not correctly installed. Another finding is that 20 percent of the drivers do not read the instructions on installing the children’s seats even though a stunning 90 percent feel they already know how to install them correctly.

Even the smallest mistake counts for children’s safety, and the most frequent mistake cited by installation techs is that the seats’ buckles are not secured tightly enough. When installed, both front and rear-facing child seats can only have less than 1 inch of slack at the top. The belt retractors in seat belts need to be locked if installed through these, which can be done either with the automatic seat belt locking retractors or using clips.

The proper angle should also be observed so that the child’s head does not lean forward or not too far reclined that the child will slide out of the belt during an unforeseen accident. Installers and testers of these child seats recommend a 30-to-40-degree angle for installation angle. These angles will allow the younger children to recline more and the older children to slouch less.

The proper use of car seats for children could reduce infant deaths in car crashes by 71 percent and deaths of children one to four years old by 54 percent.

With these numbers, 31 percent of kids killed in car crashes had no child seat at all.

Having the correct child seat for your kids’ age and size is not enough. That is half the battle because car seats must be appropriately attached in the car. Car seats are secured with either the car’s seat belt or dedicated LATCH anchors and tether straps. LATCH stands for “Lower Anchors and Tethers for Child Restraint System.” They are found in between the cushions of the seat and above them.

You can always refer to the owner’s manual for specific instructions and to find out where the LATCH anchors are located in the vehicle.

New Jersey Car Seat Laws

On your trip to Princeton, you will need to observe a bit of different car seat laws. The Garden State has one of the most stringent car seat laws that result in thousands getting tickets.

Here is a brief overview:

Newborn to age 2:

Rear-facing car seats with a five-point must be used for children under the age of 2 and under 30 lbs. In other states, you are allowed to turn the car seat around to be front-facing at the age of 1, but since data says children are less likely to die in accidents when they face the vehicle’s back, it is not allowed in New Jersey.

This also means that kids below two years of age that have long legs must remain rear-facing even if their knees are bent.

Ages 2 to 4:
A rear-facing or forward-facing car seat with a five-point harness at the vehicle’s back seat should be used for children below four years of age and below 40 lbs.
New Jersey does not allow booster seats or car seats that only use the car’s shoulders belts for kids under 4 and under 40 lbs.

Ages 4 to 8:
According to the law, children under age 8 and 57 inches tall should stay in the car seat until they have outgrown the limitations of the car seat’s capacity. Then they can move to a booster seat with a regular seat belt.

This also means that if the kid is 58 inches tall but still seven years old, he or she can move to the adult seatbelt, or, if the child has turned 8, regardless of the weight, he or she can move to an adult seatbelt as well.

When can kids move to the front seat?

There are no specifications in New Jersey law regarding what age kids can transfer in front. But the CDC recommends this to be done at the age of 13.
